The chronological resume format (also known as a reverse-chronological resume format) is the most common in Australia.
It showcases your most recent job first – and moves backward in time for every subsequent position.
However, it’s not suitable for everyone.
If you have significant employment gaps or less than 3 years of experience, consider using either the Functional or Hybrid formats instead.
Chronological Resume Format Template & Example.
I strongly advise you against copying a resume from the Internet without editing.
Unless, of course, you want to position yourself as every other generic candidate – and never get noticed by employers.
Important!
This is why resume examples below contain dummy copy only. It’s generic and hyperbolic – and definitely NOT an example of what your resume should look like.
Above: Notice how the “Recent Career History” section on the front page stacks recent roles in chronological order. This sets the tone for the rest of the resume.
Your best option is to download an attractive template and use my resume writing guides to create original content that showcases your unique points of difference and tells your career story.
But first, let me demonstrate the correct structure of a chronological resume.
Above: The second page continues the trend. The most recent role is presented first.
Five sections you must include in a chronological resume are:
- Header. Includes your contact information, title and LinkedIn profile URL. Pro tip: don’t include your date of birth!
- Profile. A 3-6 paragraph story that showcases your unique value proposition. Avoid using generic phrases like “results-oriented”!
- Key Assets. Spotlights your biggest wins and strongest skills. Be sure to quantify them!
- Work Experience. Your previous roles, presenting your mandates, responsibilities and achievements.
- Supplements. Additional sections that present your education, awards, etc. Pro tip: don’t list your referees!
Did You Know?
Employers like chronological resumes because they’re easy to read. The clear timeline organises information in the order of priority, with your most commercially relevant achievements appearing first.
Frequently Asked Questions About The Chronological Resume Format.
Not sure where to start?
Is This Format Right For Me?
Do you have a consistent work history with more than three roles? Then the answer is likely a “yes”. The chronological resume format is excellent for showcasing a stable career progression.
Do you have recent and considerable (2+ years) gaps in your career? Stay away from this format, as it will place the gaps front and centre. (Pro tip: use functional format instead).
How Do I Write A Resume In Chronological Format?

Remember – your resume is not a generic document that lists everyting you’ve done, and every skill you possess. It’s a sales document that must sell “why you” – and not the other 20 candidates interviewing for the same job.
